As the Lead Machinist, you will work in a prototype, development, and production support machine shop responsible for making one-off, precision details. Primarily will be responsible for programming, operating, and troubleshooting multi-axis NC and manual milling and turning equipment. This includes developing work holding methodology, selecting tooling and the appropriate machine for the job, and creating setup sheets for the Machinists.
What YOU will do
- Develop NC programs, using SmartCAM CAM software, based on provided Engineering definition (CAD model, hand sketch, general description of the problem). Select appropriate cutters, speeds, feeds, depth of cut parameters. Design tooling to fixature work piece as required.
- If CAM experience is with a different software package, training through SmartCAM will be required and provided.
- Send requests to supervisor for purchasing materials/ cutting tools required for the job as needed.
- Work independently using hand sketches, drawings, process instructions, test plans or other written specifications to perform job duties.
- Typical workload is low volume, one-off projects.
- All jobs going into the machine shop start with the Lead Machinist and are flowed to the Machinist best suited for the job based on skill set, schedule, etc.
- 3D modeling experience using Catia or similar software.
- Provide technical expertise to internal and external customers.
- Under direction of Team leaders, assist with executing/ communicating all technical, schedule, cost, quality, and safety requirements.
- Lead and train other machinists in performing higher complexity job assignments.
What YOU must bring to Succeed
- Technical degree or vocational training with a minimum of 10 years relevant experience OR HS Diploma/GED Equivalent with 15 years of relevant experience.
- Must have a minimum of 5 years of experience with CAM software; SmartCAM preferred.
- This position involves access to export-controlled technology which requires U.S. Person status or government authorization. A ‘U.S. Person,’ as defined by 22 C.F.R. §120.62, includes U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, individuals lawfully admitted for permanent residence (green card holders), and individuals granted asylum or refugee status in the United States. To be considered for this position, you must either be a U.S. Person or fall within a legally recognized export control exception or authorization. If hired, you will be required to provide valid proof of such status.
Desired Characteristics
- Experience machining a variety of materials – plastics/ composites/ aluminum/ carbon steel/ stainless steel/ titanium/ Inconel.
- Must be able to operate all equipment in the Lab Machine Shop, which includes manual and CNC milling and turning equipment, bandsaws, shear, as well as performing all other duties as assigned.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and experience using productivity tools; word, excel, PowerPoint.

Estimate salary range for this role: $26.60 to $39 per hour. Overtime eligible role. ST Engineering MRAS considers several factors with extending job offers, including but not limited to candidates’ key skills, relevant work experience, education/training/certification, job level, and work location.
